Paragraph Typing Practice: Easy to Hard
Paragraph typing practice from easy to hard: three original passages, when to use a 1-, 3-, or 5-minute timer, and how to step up.
Easy paragraph typing practice
Start paragraph typing practice here if short sentences still feel fast enough and long exam screens do not. This easy passage is about 90 common words, with almost no figures and very little punctuation. Type it cold on the 1-minute test.
Every morning the school bell rings at eight. The children walk in, sit at their desks, and open their books. Today they read a short story about a cat who lives in a shop. The cat sleeps on a chair near the window. When a customer comes in, the cat opens one eye and then goes back to sleep. The teacher asks them to write three lines about the cat. They write slowly and check each word. At the end of the lesson they read their lines out loud.
A clean run means you finish the passage and stay above 95% accuracy. If you miss the same short words, such as "the" or "and", repeat this passage once more before you move on. Speed from a memorized paragraph does not count.
When this passage feels easy on two different days, go to the medium passage on this page. The 400-word exam sets are the step after hard, not the place to start.
Medium paragraph typing
Medium paragraph typing adds a name, a date, and a few numbers, which is where many beginners first lose their place. The passage below is about 120 words. Use the 3-minute test at the top of this page.
On Saturday the community garden opened its new tool shed. Mrs. Rao, who has kept the plots for nine years, handed each helper a small card with one job. One group watered the spinach beds. Another tied the tomato plants to bamboo sticks. Two students swept the brick path by the gate and stacked empty pots against the wall.
By noon they had filled six baskets with beans, coriander, and a few early mangoes. A neighbour brought lemonade, and everyone sat under the neem tree to rest. Before they left, Mrs. Rao wrote the date, 18 July, in the logbook. She also noted that the tap near the shed still dripped, and that the hose needed a new washer before the next Saturday.
Log WPM and accuracy separately from your easy run. A lower speed here is normal. Stay on medium until the commas and the capital letters stop being the errors you notice most.
Hard paragraph typing practice
Hard paragraph typing practice is still shorter than an exam screen. What makes it hard is the mix of dates, decimals, and place names. This passage is about 190 words. Give it the 5-minute test, and do not retry the medium passage on the same day.
The district weather office published its June summary on Monday, 6 July. Rainfall at the town station was 186 mm, which is 22 mm below the thirty-year average of 208 mm. The hottest afternoon was 21 June, when the thermometer reached 39.4 degrees at 2:10 p.m. The coolest night fell to 21.8 degrees just before dawn on 9 June.
Forecasters counted eleven days with wind above 30 km/h, most of them blowing from the west. Two of those days, 12 June and 27 June, carried enough dust to close the small airfield from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Farmers in the eastern villages reported cracked soil in the groundnut fields, while the western canal still held water for one more irrigation.
The summary closes with a note for July. Store drinking water, check roof drains before the next storm, and do not treat one hot week as the whole season. The office will post the next update on 5 August, or sooner if rainfall crosses 50 mm in a single day. Questions can be left at the counter between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., except on Sunday.
How to step up your paragraph typing
Move up a level only after two clean runs on different days. A clean run finishes the passage at 95% accuracy or better. Drop back a level if accuracy falls under 95%, even when WPM looks strong.
| Level | Length | Timer | What is new |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | About 90 words | 1 minute | Common words, short sentences |
| Medium | About 120 words | 3 minutes | A name, a date, light punctuation |
| Hard | About 190 words | 5 minutes | Figures, decimals, and place names |
The next length after hard is a full exam block. 400 words paragraph for typing test is two 400-word sets, paced for 40 WPM in 10 minutes. Typing test paragraph 10 minutes is the sitting itself: one passage, split into thirds, typed as two 5-minute runs.
Paste any passage into Custom practice, linked below, when you want the exact words with live WPM. Printing a PDF and typing beside it splits your eyes in a way the exam will not.
All three levels, plus the longer exam guides, are listed on the typing paragraph guides. Pick the next passage from that page instead of searching for a new PDF each week.
Keep paragraph typing practice honest
One high score on a passage you have memorized is not paragraph typing practice. Rotate easy, medium, and hard, and retire a passage once you can type it without looking ahead.
- Type each new passage once before you study the errors.
- Write down WPM, accuracy, and the level, not just the best number.
- Repeat a level when the same keys fail twice.
- Leave exam-length sets for the day after a clean hard run.
“Step up when accuracy holds, not when a single fast run feels good. A memorized easy paragraph will not survive a page of figures.”
How to pick a paragraph for typing practice covers punctuation density, and the paragraph practice strategy turns these three levels into a week. For certificate tone after the hard passage feels steady, use the exam paragraph guide linked below.
Use the 5-minute test for long-paragraph stamina, then a 1-minute run to check whether raw speed moved.
