Keyboard Delay: When It Is Software—and When It Is Hardware

Delay complaints jump to RMAs too fast. Learn quick signals that separate driver stacks, filters, and bad switches before you ship a keyboard back.

Illustration. Keyboard Delay: When It Is Software—and When It Is Hardware — Keyboard Latency — Type Faster

Software delay often hits every key equally

If all keys feel sluggish after an OS update, suspect global filters, GPU scheduling, or Bluetooth stack changes before a single switch.

Latency testers that spike uniformly across keys usually point up-stack.

End a latency investigation with a short timed test on a passage you know well. Numbers should translate into calmer corrections, not just prettier charts.

When comparing Bluetooth and wired, idle the board for five minutes between modes so power states do not contaminate the first burst.

Try the latency tester

Sample end-to-end delay in milliseconds inside the same browser you use for Type Faster. Log median and jitter after cable, receiver, or power changes—then rerun a timed test to see if rhythm calms down.

Hardware delay often clusters

When one column or row drifts while others stay tight, mechanical or matrix issues are more plausible.

Pair latency sampling with the visual key map to catch selective failures.

Battery saver modes can add input scheduling variance on laptops—sample on AC once as a sanity check when jitter is confusing.

If latency looks fine but rhythm still feels wrong, return to accuracy drills—sometimes hesitation masquerades as hardware lag.

Document before you RMA

Manufacturers respond faster to reproducible numbers than to adjectives like “mushy.”

Attach latency screenshots plus a short key-map video for stubborn cases.

USB hub depth matters. A direct motherboard port is the fairest baseline before you blame a keyboard firmware update.

Treat polling Hz as a ceiling, not a personality. Firmware debounce and transport still dominate what your fingers feel day to day.

Continue practicing

This guide is about input delay and sampling. Run the latency tester to capture milliseconds and jitter, then use a typing test to see if scores stabilize.
