Input Delay Test for Keyboards: What You Are Actually Measuring

Input delay tests sound simple until you mix OS settings, repeat filters, and browser tabs. Learn a clean definition so your before-and-after comparisons stay honest.

Separate hardware delay from software filters

Some operating systems ship accessibility filters, slow repeat rates, or IME pipelines that add perceived delay even when the switch is instant.

Document language layout, filter keys, and any macro software before you blame the board.

When comparing Bluetooth and wired, idle the board for five minutes between modes so power states do not contaminate the first burst.

Log median and jitter together; a stable median with rising jitter often predicts “off” sessions before your WPM chart moves.

Try the latency tester

Sample end-to-end delay in milliseconds inside the same browser you use for Type Faster. Log median and jitter after cable, receiver, or power changes—then rerun a timed test to see if rhythm calms down.

Why browser tests are legitimate for typists

You type inside a browser for Type Faster benchmarks, so measuring there reflects the real stack you compete in.

A dedicated oscilloscope lab is stricter, but it is not the environment your leaderboard score lives in.

Close media-heavy background tabs before sampling; compositor contention shows up as spikes that look like keyboard problems.

After you change cables or receivers, resample latency before you judge a typing score from the same night. Fresh numbers prevent you from blaming technique for a flaky stack.

Turn measurements into a checklist

Capture median and spread, not one hero screenshot, then change a single variable—cable, receiver slot, or power plan—and resample.

If delay drops but mistakes remain, return to drills instead of buying another keyboard.

Pair browser latency samples with the same browser profile you use for Type Faster benchmarks so the pipeline matches reality.

If one key column drifts in latency while others stay tight, cross-check with the full key map before you assume the OS is at fault.

Continue practicing

This guide is about input delay and sampling. Run the latency tester to capture milliseconds and jitter, then use a typing test to see if scores stabilize.
