Sticky Keys: How to Turn Off on Windows and Mac
Pressed Shift five times by accident? Learn what Sticky Keys does, how to turn it off on Windows and macOS, and when to use a real keyboard test instead.
What Sticky Keys is designed to do
Sticky Keys lets you press modifier keys one at a time instead of holding combinations—useful for users who cannot hold Shift+Alt+letter simultaneously. Windows enables it after rapid Shift presses unless you decline the prompt.
It is not the same as a key physically stuck in the down position. Mixing the two diagnoses wastes time.

Press any key on your physical keyboard and watch it highlight on a full layout—free in your browser, no install required. Use the layout menu if you type on UK, Turkish, Arabic, or other regional keyboards.

Open Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard and disable Sticky Keys. Also uncheck “Allow the shortcut key to start Sticky Keys” so Shift taps do not re-enable it mid-session.
On older builds, Control Panel → Ease of Access Center → Make the keyboard easier to use exposes the same toggles.
If liquid was involved, wait until the board is fully dry before powering on. Testing too early can short traces and turn a recoverable spill into a full replacement.
For international layouts, switch the checker diagram to match your language pack so you are not misreading a perfectly good ANSI board.
Turn off Sticky Keys on Mac and confirm hardware
On macOS, open System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard and review Sticky Keys and Slow Keys. Disable anything you did not intentionally enable.
After software is ruled out, run the browser keyboard test. If a key still repeats on the visual layout, return to mechanical troubleshooting guides.
End troubleshooting with a calm typing test only when every key highlights green. Speed work on a faulty board trains bad compensation habits.
Layout guides (ANSI, ISO, JIS) change symbol locations more than letter rows. Match your OS language pack to the checker diagram so you do not remap a healthy board.
