Shift + Arrow Ghosting: Why Fighting Games and RPGs Miss Inputs

Holding Shift while tapping arrows is a classic matrix torture test. Learn why laptops struggle, how to test, and what remaps help without new hardware.

Modifiers count toward rollover limits

Shift, Ctrl, and Alt are real keys in the matrix. Holding Shift plus two arrows can be four simultaneous reports before you add an attack key.

Use the Space+arrows preset to mirror platformers and menu navigation stacks.

After any chord test, reset the lab and rerun once on a cold start. Sticky OS key states can fake ghosts on the second attempt.

When orange “missing” keys appear, press slower and confirm physical contact—sometimes flex, not rollover, is the culprit.

Pair rollover checks with the full key map monthly. Dead switches and weak chords are different failures with different fixes.

Remap only after you measure

Moving jump to space or using arrow-cluster-only games sidesteps bad chords but does not fix a failing board.

Document failing combos if you need a warranty claim on a new laptop.

Revisit chords after OS updates or driver installs—stack changes occasionally filter modifier keys before the browser sees them.

Log max simultaneous keys in a notes app when comparing boards. Marketing NKRO is less useful than your measured peak.
