What “keytest” should show you

A useful keytest highlights the exact key you pressed on a full layout, keeps it marked as tested, and lets you reset for a second pass. That beats typing random letters into a search box where duplicate keys hide gaps.

Aim for 100% coverage: every letter, digit, modifier, and spacebar segment if your board splits space.

Budget versus premium keyboards diverge on stabilizers and QC, not magic WPM. Test Enter, space, and your weakest finger’s home key before you trust a price tag.

Laptop keyboard economics favor replacement over heroic repair. Budget time for a swap rather than hunting individual scissor clips unless you enjoy micro-surgery.

Try the keyboard checker

Press any key on your physical keyboard and watch it highlight on a full layout—free in your browser, no install required. Use the layout menu if you type on UK, Turkish, Arabic, or other regional keyboards.

Ghosting and rollover (optional deep check)

Hold several adjacent gaming keys while the checker is open. If phantom keys appear lit without being pressed, your board may lack full n-key rollover—relevant for gamers, less so for typists.

Document odd behavior with screenshots if you are RMAing a new purchase within return window.

Photograph your layout before removing keycaps. Use the checker while reassembling so each cap lands on the correct switch the first time.

Separate software settings from hardware: if Sticky Keys or Filter Keys is on, disable it before you blame the switch. Then confirm with the visual checker so you are not chasing the wrong problem.

After diagnostics, measure typing speed

Hardware confidence and typing speed are separate skills. Once keys register cleanly, run a one-minute typing test to see whether your bottleneck is equipment or technique.

Continue practicing

This guide is about hardware and input diagnostics. Run the keyboard checker to verify every key, then use a typing test when you are ready to measure speed.
