Why Fn is not a standard modifier

Fn usually does not send its own scancode to applications; it changes what other keys mean at the firmware level. That is why OS remappers sometimes cannot bind Fn alone.

Look for Fn-lock (often Esc+Fn or a BIOS toggle) if you need true F-keys without holding Fn every time.

Photograph your layout before removing keycaps. Use the checker while reassembling so each cap lands on the correct switch the first time.

Membrane versus mechanical debates matter less than consistent key travel. Pick the board you will practice on for thirty days, then benchmark—not the board you borrowed for a weekend.

Test secondary actions deliberately

Hold Fn and tap F5–F8 while watching the checker if your layout maps those to media. Some keys only register when Fn is held, so test both states.

If brightness still changes but the checker never sees F5, your machine is handling media at a layer below the browser— that is expected, not a defect.

Laptop keyboard economics favor replacement over heroic repair. Budget time for a swap rather than hunting individual scissor clips unless you enjoy micro-surgery.

When only one zone fails, note whether it is a row or a column on the on-screen map. That pattern helps support teams approve a warranty claim faster.

Fn failures that need service
